Stephanie Duprie Routh is a photographer and writer. Recognized by professional organizations and included in permanent collections of museums, universities, and hotels, her work uses the visual language of photography for narrative storytelling and conceptual art. She explores the essence of place and the transitory states of being human to tell stories through layers and interventions, creating new ways of seeing and considering place and self. She travels worldwide for assignments, commissions, and personal projects.

Covered in graffiti, shadow and shade, Marseille hides away its treasures. The sea swallowed maps to the gold coins fired in flames afar and the fish became disguised guardians. Sea caves protect the secrets created by the arrival of Lazarus, Mary Magdalene, and the Knights Templar. If the hidden artifacts weren’t intended to be lost, the siren’s call that wafts alongside jazz notes on the mistral wind ferries the legends and myths into the minds of men and women. Whispers of buried wonders abound. The port mouth may have opened for the Greeks to find Le Panier but today Marseille holds in its cradle civilizations from near and far. They arrive by train, land, and sea to seek the undiscoverable. Tiny islands have forts built to the edges to serve as a first defense. Cathedrals and abbeys hold promises of Holy Grails. The city of temptation and an untamable nature is guarded by the sea’s beauty and danger. Creatives of every kind—photographers, writers, musicians, and chefs—arrive bearing the flavors of their cultures and the secrets of their craft. They trade in sparks and symbols, offering their stories like incense, gathering wisdom like scattered light, each feeding from the fire of the other. The mysteries of Marseille lie in wait—ancient, restless, and deep—and within the candlelit salons of the modern Enlightenment, visionaries and poets gather like alchemists, daring to unweave the veils of the unknown and summon truth from the dark tides of history.
