This long-term project, documented over the many trans-global visits I make home to assist and care for them, aims to document the struggle of adapting to disability late in life, the issue of vulnerability, the emotional consequence of male/female power reversal, and to illuminate the path to accepting help. With this story, I hope to raise awareness of the fragility of life and the difficulties of caring for ageing parents.
At 74, my father sustained a head injury that rendered him blind and resulted in a host of neurological problems. Suddenly, my mother had been thrown into a full-time role as caretaker, nurse, assistant, companion, and head of household. As Korean immigrants in America, my family has adhered to rigid traditional cultural standards emphasising male leadership and pride. With this unexpected shift in their lives, the power dynamic between my parents – and between my father and the outside world – began to change for the first time.
