Daria Cipriani is a photographer born in Tuscany Italy in the fifties.
She has lived in Canada, USA, Italy, Antigua and presently in Vancouver, B.C.
She has combined her passion for travelling with her passion for photography. Her curiosity and art of observation have been transposed in images mostly taken on the street, which reflect the gesture of ordinary life, and often the discomfort of the less fortunate filtered by her understanding, emotions and feelings.
To Daria, photography is reading people’s life through the map of their lines, their body language, their stories, their surrounding, their questioning eyes, making an effort to give voice or make visible what is mostly ignored.
In 2015 at MIAMI ART BASEL she exhibited a series of photographs taken in Vancouver.
The Title was ”EAST SIDE STORY – Cantico : How can I tell my mother I am afraid”
This serie is a lyric of realism and vision. It witness degradation, yet it is the humanity which emerges, a call to go beyond and raise awareness.
These photographs acted as the advocate of people despair, pain and discomfort, their request for help and hope and she felt that it was her responsibility to make sure that the viewers heard the message.
I chose to attend this workshop mainly because I was impressed by the work of Richard Dumas.
I come to Paris right after a photography trip to India which had left me mesmerized with the culture and the humanity tangible at every corner.
My primary interest in photography is what I call street portraiture.
I feel that nothing more than the people on the street can give a feeling for the culture and vibes of a Country or a city, yet catching that feeling in a split of a second , communicating with the eyes without often speaking the language is a great challenge and at times frustrating.
I came to the workshop to observe, ask question and understand better how to established the connection which goes beyond taking a picture or a portrait and to learn how to tell the story of the people we photograph.
Richard has been an inspiration not only as a great photographer but mainly as humble human being, ready to share his knowledge, his experience and to answer questions.
