Cairo

de Betty Pietak (Egypte)

As a foreigner, living in and exploring the intimate side of Cairo with my camera, I am searching to visually represent my experiences by recording texture, layers, exceptional light and those few people who are open, allowing me into their lives to take photographs. I suppose, in some ways, I am seeking to make sense of this chaotic city, full of life, sound and smells, by focusing on smaller, digestible details in central, yet dense, neighbourhoods. This collection of images doesn’t define Cairo but it presents a glimpse into a place I’ve called home for almost five years, a city that feels both familiar and unfamiliar at once.

The word « Cairo » carries grand expectations and monumental ideologies of the past. These images are a series or a collection of present, in-between moments that shape and define the experience of this city when few take notice.
