Not necessarily always directing, but talking and listening and watching as expressions and angles and shadows change. I like to surround the face, to frame it’s features and use low-key soft natural light with subtle shadows. Simple and bold with no distractions. I often struggle with conflicts. Of whether to approach a stranger who I can see could make a great portrait, or whether to take more time over each image and potentially make my subject uncomfortable, or of how this amazing media can be used for good. I know that I’ll always be learning how best to show the stories of those that I have the privilege to photograph.
From a background in developing computer software, I’m now a photographer and author living in Paris with my first book “The Photographer’s Guide to Paris” published by Peachpit Press. I’m also a trustee with a vibrant and courageous anti-slavery organisation, Unseen, giving help to those the victims that otherwise go unnoticed. I aim to feel and show a proximity with my portrait subjects. So I stay close to my subjects and interact at all times.
