* Learn how to create a new series;

* Learn and improve how to build a photographic series be it linked to fiction, reality or both.

* Build a plastic approach and an artistic coherence in the approach of a subject.

* Develop your own visual language and photographic identity.

This workshop in full immersion with Anders Petersen aims at developping the aptitude of the participant to carry out a photography assignment in an institutional context. This experience will allow the participant to develop his/her capacity to produce a photographic work in a given location and throughout a given limited time period.

BIOGRAPHY

Anders Petersen was born in 1944 in Stockholm, Sweden. At 14 years old, his family moved to Karlstad in Värmland, where he met the artists Karin Bodland and Lars Sjögren. In 1961, he stayed for some time in Hamburg in order to learn German, write and paint. He didn’t take any pictures. Five years later he met Christer Strömholm and became a student at his School of Photography in Stockholm. Strömholm was not just his teacher but also a close friend. Their friendship influenced him for life. In 1967, he starts photographing a bar called Café Lehmitz in Hamburg, close to Zeughausmarkt. He was photographing there for a period of almost three years and in 1970 he had his first solo exhibition over the bar in Café Lehmitz with 350 photographs nailed to the wall.

In 1973 he published his first book “Gröna Lund”, about people in an amusement park in Stockholm. In 1974 he graduated from the Swedish Filmschool, Dramatiska Institutet in Stockholm. In 1978 he published “Café Lehmitz ” in Germany. In 1984 the first book in a trilogy about locked instituations was published. The three books were about people in a prison, a nursing house, and a mental hospital. After photographing the mental hospital for three years he oriented himself towards a more free approach in a kind of diary like photography.

During 2003 and 2004, Anders Petersen was appointed Professor of Photography in the School of Photography and Film at the University of Göteborg, Sweden. He regularly has workshops and exhibitions throughout Europe, Asia and in the USA. He has received numerous grants and rewards since the seventies.

In 2003 Anders Petersen was elected the “Photographer of the Year” by the International Photofestival in Arles. In 2006 he was shortlisted as one of four for the “Deutsche Börse Photography Prize”. In 2007 he received the “Special Prize of the Jury” for his exhibition “Exaltation of Humanity” by the third International Photofestival in Lianzhou, China. In 2008 he received the “Dr. Erich Salomon Award” by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie, Germany.

“The Arles Contemporary Book Award for 2009″ went to JH Engström and  Anders Petersen’s collaborative book “From Back Home” by Max Ström.  The book was nominated to “The Best Photographic Book in Sweden,  year 2009″ and also Winner of Design Bronze Lion in Cannes. In 2010, he was in the jury for the BMW Prize at Paris Photo.

Program

In 2018, Eyes in Progress proposes a new frame of a one week training course. 9 participants will be placed in a situation of total immersion, in order to produce a photographic series, from inception to end, under the direction of a distinguished photographer.

Participants will be placed in a situation of « artistic residence ». Working days shall be spitted in various sessions: shootings, editing, masterclasses, commented projections of films and mutual exchanges on a daily basis.

Moreover, other activities will be proposed, outside of the working sessions, in order to allow participants to appropriate their environment and to arouse their creativity and inspiration.

These sessions will take place in a typical and very charming country house, a so said ‘mas’, located in the hamlet of Cosprons (Occitanie region), close to the border of France and Spain. Located in the bottom of a valley covered with vineyards, not far from the Bay of Paulliles, you will enjoy a quiet and beautiful environment, living among warmful and authentic inhabitants.

You will be asked to adapt to a total immersion life, to take risks and to go beyond your limits, in order to progress and to get access to a higher level in your practice of photography.

No later than one month before the workshop, participants will be provided with a file. Among other information, you will find in this file a list of subjects and of contacts on site, to allow you to think about your project.

DETAILED AGENDA:

Day One (starting on Sunday, 7pm):

Introduction
Welcome of participants on training site.
Preliminary presentations, each participant briefly introduces oneself to the group, introduction of the invited photographer.
Presentation by Eyes in Progress of the 7 days organization and of the pre-established projects.
Description and presentation of the local environment.
Questions/answers.
First exchanges related to the selected subjects and/or still subjects to further thinking.

Dinner at the Mas for the group.

Day 2 (Monday):
9:30am – 12:30pm
Each participant shows out one or two completed and published series. They will present themselves orally to the group (speech duration limited to 15 minutes).

1:30 – 3pm
Inception and starting of a photographer’s project
By illustrating his presentation with his own projects, Anders Petersen will explain how to make the best choice of the right angle of the subject – paying attention to one’s experience and to previous works. He will evoke environment related constraints and the way to take them into account to perform the work. He will provide the participants with key-factors and suggestions.

3 – 6pm
Every participant achieves an individual reconnaissance outdoor in order to identify some points and/or meet with potential subjects (appointments could have been arranged previously). As far as possible, they will start making some shots. The staff can help in arranging contacts or in making suggestions.

Back indoor, exchanges about the reconnaissance carried on and identified constraints. Final choice of projects with Anders Petersen.

Day 3 to Day 7 –Tuesday up to Saturday):
9:30 – 11pm
Every morning, Anders Petersen will make a presentation of one of her projects or of some significant aspect or her professional cursus. The goal of these sessions is to inspire the participants in the realization of their own series.

11 – 17am
Every trainee goes outdoors to shoot their subjects. Participants come back to the training facility as soon as they can, in order to get a critical review and improvement suggestions of Anders Petersen.

Through a selection and a discussion with Anders Petersen around the best pictures of the day, participants will work at developing their series and improving their global approach of the subject.

5 – 6pm
Exchanges in group on shooting and associated problems such as encountered. Synthesis and solutions, presented by Anders Petersen.

Day 8 (Sunday)
9:30 am – 1pm
Edition of the final portfolio.
Each participant works on the making up and the sequence of the final selection. He writes a text related to the series such as presented. The series and the associated wording shall be forwarded to a mentor of their choice.

2 – 4pm
Final screening and/or exhibition that will be attended by all the people involved in the realization of the series, as well as inhabitants in the surroundings.

Conditions

- Only 9 students will be admitted for each session. Students will be granted admission to the workshop based on a review of a selection of 10 of their photographs.

- The 2.200€ fee includes accommodation and meals. It does not include transport nor on the ground other expenses. For participants coming from outside the European Union, please be aware that there is a bank fee when making the payments via bank transfer, you may avoid them by using alternative platforms such as Payzen or Transferwise.

- In order to confirm your application, an advance payment of €100 is advised. Once the application is completed, we will send an email via PayZen to the participant in order to settle the payment. If the candidate is accepted, this amount will be deducted from the overall cost of the workshop.

- In case the participation is not confirmed, he will get a full pay back of the 100€ fee.

- If accepted, the participant will receive a course contract confirming the success of his application by email.

- To confirm registration, the participant must return this contract to us, signed, within ten days, along with payment of 30% of the cost of the workshop.

- The rest of the fee must be paid by the first day of the workshop at the latest. The participant will then receive a receipt.

- A dossier in order to get prepared for the workshop will be sent to the participant at least two weeks before the course begins.

- If you're willing to participate in more than one workshop, we do offer a 10% discount on the following workshops' price.

Pre-requisite

- Successful candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to photograph.

- Participants working digitally should bring their own laptops, and everything needed for digital editing.

- Participants working on film might be able to do so but under special conditions, please call us beforehand to discuss it.

A technical assistant will be present during the workshop.

After the workshop

- The portfolios produced by each participant will be published on the site of Eyes in Progress.

- Mentors are photography experts such as a photo editors, journalists, creative directors, gallery curators, then will then critique these portfolios. The review, if written, will be published on the participant's page on Eyes in Progress.

- In case the participant does not want a portfolio review after the workshop, the workshop price can be reduced of 70€.

- Video interviews in which the students discuss their work, their motivation as photographers, as well as what they learned during the workshop will also be posted on the site. In case the participant is not willing to have his video online, we won't publish it, however, we do encourage to record the video anyways as a practical exercise on how to orally express himself as a photographer.

- Social media modules will be available in order to share the page with friends and contacts.

- Each participant will be awarded a certificate of completion of the course.

- The participants will be required to evaluate the workshop when it has been completed, to show their level of overall satisfaction and the extent of their acquisition of new skills. These evaluations will help us to improve our workshops.

- If the participant is not willing to have his profile online (portfolio, review, video), we will of course respect his decision and will not publish it.

Deadlines

- There will be two rounds of applications review:

> If you apply before July 9th 2018: successful applicants will be informed via email by July 11th 2018.

> If you apply after July 9th 2018: successful applicants will be informed via email by August 11th 2018.

It is possible that the workshop is completed with the first round of applications, in that case, the second round of applications will not be processed.

Applications will be open until August 9th 2018.

- In case the participant comes from far away and needs to make early travel arrangements regarding the workshop's date, we will study his request to review his application ahead of the official deadlines.

- Eyes in Progress reserves the right to cancel groups with less than 7 participants. Students will be given either a full refund or offered a place with an alternative photographer. In the event of a cancellation, students will be given at least 3 weeks advance notice. Eyes in Progress reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised.

- If a participant decides to cancel for whatever reason, this must be confirmed in writing:

. Eyes in Progress will reimburse all the registration costs except for the €100 administrative fee, if the participant informs Eyes in Progress of cancellation at least 3 weeks before the first day of the workshop. Beyond this time limit, Eyes in Progress will charge the following:

. 50% of the cost if cancelled between 6 and 20 days before the workshop commences.

. 100% of the cost if cancelled less than 5 days before the workshop commences.

. All workshops that are commenced but not completed through the fault of the participant need to be paid in full.

- Eyes in Progress is not responsible for reimbursement of travel expenses in case a workshop is cancelled. We recommend that you buy refundable air tickets and/or travel insurance.
