Wieneke de Leeuw

Pilgrimage to Clusius

by Wieneke de Leeuw (The Netherlands)

Wieneke de Leeuw became interested in the botanist Clusius while researching her art book *Fritillaria meleagris*.
In the 16th century, Clusius traveled across Europe to conduct the first scientific studies of wild plants and published the earliest floras.
In 1592, he established the first botanical garden in the Netherlands (in Leiden) and became renowned for cultivating tulips.
Wieneke follows in the scientist’s footsteps, seeking out traces from that era.

Portfolio from the Produce a photographic series workshop with Todd Hido, June 2026.
