Xia Jingyi, a photographer and documentary filmmaker, was born in Yiyang, Hunan Province in 1999. She graduated from the Photography Department of Bard College in New York State, USA, in 2021. With a passion for film, she worked as a film projectionist at Bard College and later pursued further studies in cinematography at the Beijing Film Academy. Since then, she has participated in the production of multiple short films as a director of photography, art director, and still photographer, while independently creating several art and humanistic documentaries.
Her works have been featured in photography and art exhibitions in cities such as New York, Berlin, Tokyo, Beijing, Changsha, and Chongqing. Her matchbox portfolio, THE NOCTURNAL, was published by HAKUCHI in 2020. The same series of works received the “Kunpeng Award” at the Pingyao International Photography Festival’s Chinese Young Photographer Promotion Plan in 2021, was shortlisted for the “ChiRi Photography Festival,” and received a special mention from judge Lin Zhipeng (aka “Number 223”). Her documentary Where You Look 2023 was nominated for the Best Documentary Award at the 2024 Amsterdam International Film Festival (ARFF).
