Amsterdam‘s Cannabis Culture

by Rafael Dada (Germany)

The photographic series I chose to create during the visual storytelling workshop reflects my interest in documenting cultures and subcultures. My approach was to portray Amsterdam’s cannabis culture by visiting one of the cities first coffeeshops – The Bulldog – that opened its gates in 1975. Other than that, I accompanied two cannabis experts, “Uncle Stoner” and “General Hooter”, to the Cannabis College and the famous Prix d’Ami coffeeshop. My final series aims to show the humans behind the cannabis enthusiasts as well as the mood of the locations and the situations.

Rafael is a Trainee in Marketing and Communication at Cannamedical Pharma in Cologne, Germany. With a background in Political Science, North American Studies, and Film and Media Studies, he currently pursues shaping the evolving German medical cannabis market through communication and marketing. Besides his professional job, Rafael is an aspiring documentary photographer focusing on social and cultural issues.
