A Single Breath Held Between Worlds

by Annette Karin Richards (New Zealand)

This series traces the fragile conversation between body and landscape. Water gathers what the land forgets; light becomes breath; silence becomes memory. Each image holds the moment before dissolution — a single breath suspended between worlds.

Annette-Karin Richards is a New Zealand artist and writer whose practice moves between photography, poetic image-making, and text.

Her work explores memory, landscape, and the emotional residues of place. Through portraiture, landscape, and constructed sequences, she traces thresholds between absence and presence, rupture and repair.

Working through sustained engagement with environments and lived experience, Richards treats image and language as fragments of a wider, unfinished narrative.

She is currently developing Spine of the Dunes: Visions & Specimens, an unfolding artist’s book combining chemigrams and poetry that continues her exploration of landscape, material process, and memory across New Zealand and Europe.
