I made videos to catch the atmosphere of the location because the photos alone just didn’t do it justice. At that moment something clicked, and I started to make the images and videos that felt right, without thinking too much.
This series is a starting point to expand on, because all this feels urgent and I know there’s more in there.

Maarten Hornstra (1973) is both railway engineer and autonomous photographer, with a fascination for stories about unexpected and less-
visited places within Europe.
His project Pyramyths takes place in Bosnia-Herzegovina. When a friend of a friend of a friend mentioned she had heard of certain Bosnian Pyramids, Maarten’s attention was triggered. Driven by curiosity, he went to the town of Visoko to photograph the surroundings and its
visitors. What draws them to this place, and what are they looking for?
The ongoing series Call For Escape Route/Out Of This World was started during a workshop with Todd Hido in Cosprons, France. This work is a break in style from his previous projects, and is about dealing with anxiousness in recent times.
Maarten was is primary self-taught, and also trained at the Rotterdam Photo Academy (2 years) and by photographer Jeroen Toirkens (ongoing). He followed workshops with photographers such as Laura Pannack (workshop Walking With Strangers, Berlin), Todd Hido (producing a photographic series and Frederik Buyckx (documentary photography, Albania).
