Amsterdam Moments

by Kees van de Veen (The Netherlands)

I am a freelance photojournalist from the north of The Netherlands working for newspapers and magazines, both regional and national. Besides assigments I also photograph my own projects. I am interested in real stories from real people, photographed with respect and dignity.

For this workshop I’ve shot two stories.
The first one is about the Surinamese Songbird Society based in the Bijlmer area in Amsterdam.
Surinamese men train their Surinamese birds to sing as beautifully and as often as possible. During the matches, it is not only about the win, but also about the social aspect. Unfortunately, the singing season had ended during the making of this reportage, most birds moult and only sing again in the spring.

The other story is inspired by the work of Ed Kashi’s book Abandoned Moments. These images were taken without looking through the camera’s viewfinder. Since I never shoot this way, it was a good reason to give it a try. The series consists of photos I took of passers-by on the streets of Amsterdam.
