Day one of the workshop… my laptop and Yashica D were stolen in Perpignan and I have no idea what I’m going to photograph. It seems like all the other participants have projects in mind. I’m not prepared at all. In Port Vendres, I wander the quayside aimlessly, completely preoccupied with my missing belongings. Suddenly, a commotion at the water’s edge catches my eye. A commercial fishing boat has pulled in. Men on board sort the day’s catch and throw the unusable scraps overboard. On the quayside, rough, sun ripened men jostle with nets and fishing poles. They pluck dead sardines, squids and other scraps from the water to use as bait. Every afternoon they come here to fish. I have found my subject.
