We Are Here Project : For this workshop I chose to photograph the group We Are Here- an activist group of refugees in Amsterdam who take over abandoned buildings, and call attention to their lack of rights as immigrants in The Netherlands. We Are Here were a bit apprehensive let strangers photograph them because they’ve received a lot of media attention recently- mostly because of fight between two members which resulted in a death. My pictures aim to portray their daily life, which is mostly monotonous- since they are not allowed to work or participate in society. I photographed them and their living conditions. This is my first project working in black and white and my first time working in Amsterdam. This is a project that is promising but it deserves more time.
My interest in photography derives from my experience as a documentary filmmaker. Photography is new for me, and unlike most people who moved from photography to film, I worked backwards- just now starting to engage with this new medium. My film and photography work focuses on the people at the margins of society and refugees. Both come from a personal experience as a person who was a refugee of the Guatemalan civil war and a Latino immigrant in the United States.
