For over 100 years, the Place de la Republique has served many purposes, from its official function as a monument to the French Republic, to being the unofficial memorial to the victims of the January and November terrorist attacks, to being a meeting place for Parisians out for a night on the town. In April 2016, the Place de la Republique was the center for Nuit Debout, a protest movement analogous to the Occupy Wall Street movement in the U.S. This photo essay presents scenes from the Nuit Debout as well as street performers and nightlife.
