Celebrating the traveller way of life
by Anja Hammächer (Switzerland)
The appleby horse fair, dating back to 1685, is deeply cherished by the traveller community – an ethnocultural minority in ireland and england. as a result of forced sedentarisation many travellers have abandoned their nomadic lifestyle. however they take pride in their heritage with family bonds and strong religious faith. here in appleby they celebrate they come together and calibrate their culture and tradition.
